Born in Rotherham in 1927 Peter has spent his entire life living in the town and still lives there at the grand age of 93 years having celebrated his most recent birthday at the end of March this year.

At the age of 33 Peter married his wife, Doreen spending 40 years of happy life together until her sad passing in 2000. His son, a helicopter pilot who trained and flew in the Royal Navy is now Chief Training Officer for the Air Sea Rescue Service and lives north of Aberdeen with Peters’ three grandchildren.

Peter was initiated into Freemasonry in Wentworth Lodge No 1239 on January 5th 1970 and Exalted into Phoenix Royal Arch Chapter in 1983.

Peter was in the Chair of his Mother Lodge in 1980 sharing a splendid year with other couples and making friendships, some of which have lasted to the present day.

In 2001 Peter continued his long contact with Masonic friends in Nottinghamshire joining the North Notts Past Masters Lodge No 9525 meeting in Worksop, a membership which continues to this day. Finding driving at night more and more difficult Peter joined Lodge of South Yorkshire No 9633, a daylight Lodge, in 2006 taking the Chair in 2011. He continues to be an active member and would have received his Jubilee certificate from the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, a personal friend, in May to avoid the winter months and the threat of bad weather. Sadly this isn’t now possible but Peter has received his certificate through the post together with a letter of congratulation from the RW Provincial Grand Master. When life returns to normality there will be a formal presentation in front of Peters’ Masonic friends and their families.

The Masonic love of Peters life however has been his membership of The Ancient and Accepted Rite, The Order of the Rose Croix where he holds the high honour of being a member of the 32nd Degree, the second highest in the Order.

Peter joined Welcome Chapter No 189 in Sheffield in 1973 becoming Most Wise Sovereign in 1984 amd served as Prelate for over 20 years. He was awarded the honour of the 30th Degree in the same year and subsequently the 31st Degree in 1996. In 2003 recognition of his service to the Order was acknowledged by his promotion to the 32nd Degree which he still holds.

Continuing his commitment to the Order he took the Chair of Stonegate Chapter No 987, of which he was a founder, in 2017, shortly after his 90th birthday.

Above all Peter is known throughout his Masonic contacts as a kind and caring man, always thinking of those around him and always eager to be involved. He still regularly performs pieces of ritual in Craft and Rose Croix and continues to thoroughly enjoy every aspect of his Masonic life.

Peter now shares his enjoyment of Freemasonry in particular and life in general with his Companion, Cath and the two are inseparable at masonic events in Sheffield and Nottinghamshire.

A lovely man and a shining example of Masonic and Christian principles Peter has attended as a member of The Methodist Church for the past 90 years we look forward to celebrating his special achievement in due course.

W. Bro John Boyington,
Deputy Provincial Grand Master
